Silicon Manganese (SiMn) is a crucial ferroalloy used extensively in steelmaking and casting industries. This alloy is composed of silicon (typically 10-20%) and manganese (65-70%), with trace amounts of carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. SiMn is known for its dual role as both a deoxidizer and an alloying agent, significantly improving the mechanical properties of steel such as strength, toughness, and elasticity.
The reaction in the furnace reduces manganese and silicon oxides to their elemental forms, combining them with iron to form the alloy.
