Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a synthetic compound made of silicon and carbon, known for its exceptional hardness, thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. It is widely used in various industrial applications due to its durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures. Here is an overview of its properties, production, and applications:
These traits make SiC a top choice for industrial applications requiring durability, heat resistance, and stability:
Silicon carbide is primarily produced through the Acheson process, which involves heating a mixture of silica (SiO2) and carbon (typically in the form of coke) in an electric furnace at temperatures around 2000°C. This high-temperature reaction results in the formation of SiC crystals, which are then processed into different forms based on the desired application.
